Publishing music of women composers, past and present.

b. ca. 1590

Caterina Assandra was the first Italian nun to publish an entire collection of music . Born into a noble Pavian family, Assandra received a fine education, including studying music with Don Benedetto Re, the Maestro di Capella at the cathedral in Pavia. She entered the convent of Sant'Agata in 1609, but probably continued her musical studies with Re, as is suggested by his publication of her compositions in collections of his own music.
