Margaret-of-Austria

1480 - 1530

Daughter of the Habsburg Emperor Maximilian I and Mary of Burgundy, Margaret of Austria was one of the most powerful political figures of the Renaissance as well as an amateur poet, musician, and artist. Widowed in 1504 by the death of Philibert of Savoy, Margaret ruled Savoy alone until 1507, then was summoned by her father to serve as regent of the Netherlands. Her reign was one of remarkable stability, and she was a noted patron and practitioner of the arts.
