This work was commissioned in 1978 by the Pennsylvania Music Teachers' Association. Included are: 1. The Cat - a pseudo oratoria 2. The Whipporwill - a semi-madrigal 3. The Scarecrow - a quasi-invention 4. The Frog - an antiphonal trifle 5. The Dragonfly - Lament for a dead child 6. The Cow - sort of a fugue. An additional song is included as an encore. 7. The Swallow - an almost strict canon. The descriptive phrases are the composer's. Texts for the songs are haiku's written by the composer.
