Dolores White (b. 1932)
Dolores White was born in Chicago, Illinois. She earned her bachelor's degree in Piano Performance at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and also studied at Teachers College, Columbia University, and piano privately with James Friskin in New York City. She completed her master's degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music and did post-graduate work at Ohio State University. White held positions at a number of colleges, universities, and arts organizations, including Wooster College; Hartt School of Music; Cleveland Music School; Karamu House; and the Metropolitan Campus of Cuyahoga Community College, where she served as assistant professor of music. Since her retirement from teaching in 2000, White has continued to compose vocal and instrumental works. Her music includes many songs, piano compositions, choral works, instrumental arrangements of Negro spirituals, and original works for instrumental ensemble. Several of her works have been recorded: Blues Dialogues for solo violin by Gregory Walker on Kaleidoscope: Music by African American Women, Toccata for piano by Karen Walwyn on the album Dark Fires, and Crystal Gazing by the Cleveland Chamber Symphony on Cleveland Plays Music by African Americans. Centered in American and European Classical elements, she fashions music that reaches into the rich resources of American traditions and music that draws on ethnic and international materials.
