Elfrida Andrée composed the String Quartet in A Major when she was twenty years old. The work was not published during her lifetime. Published here for the first time, 139 years after its conception. This romantic-style string quartet is fashioned after those of Robert Schumann (1810-1856) and Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847); the influence of the latter is particularly evident in the character of the third movement. The outer two movements are in sonata-form, the second movement is song-form, and the third is a scherzotrio entitled “Intermezzo”.
