Sylvia Glickman (1932 - 2006)

Sylvia GlickmanNew York born pianist and composer, she received Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School and an L.R.A.M. in performance from the Royal Academy of Music in London. Winner of prizes for both performance and composition, including a Solo Artist Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Fulbright Scholarship and grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, she has performed to critical acclaim in solo and chamber concerts on four continents. She received the 1995 Award for "Distinguished Service in Support of Concert Music Composed by Women" from the New York Women Composers, Inc.; annual Meet-the Composer and ASCAP Awards; and commissions from the PA Council on the Arts, the Pro Arte Chorale, the Huntingdon Trio, the Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra, Network for New Music, and the Schuylkill Symphony Orchestra. The founder of the Hildegard Publishing Company, she also served as the Artistic Director of the Hildegard Chamber Players. She has prepared editions for Hildegard, for Da Capo Press and for the G.K. Hall Publishing Company's "Three Centuries of American Music," and co-edited, with Martha Furman Schleifer, "Women Composers: Music Through the Ages," the twelve-volume series of music by women composers. Her own works have been performed throughout the U.S. and in Europe; her three Holocaust remembrance works (The Walls are Quiet Now, Am I a Murderer? and Carved in Courage) is available on CD in 2001 (Albany Records). Ms. Glickman passed away in 2006 after a battle with cancer.
