The “canzonetta” or “little song” is a strophic setting of a simple text with a lyrical vocal line. This collection is an early foreshadowing of the aria form, which would develop later. These “canzonettas” contain lovely and developed vocal lines that are expressive but not declamatory and indicative of the composer’s talent as a singer.
