Bonds originally set this text for solo soprano and piano, performed frequently by Leontyne Price. Price asked Bonds to arrange “Sinner” and three other spirituals for her to sing with the Rust College A Cappella Choir. This work for Soprano soloist and SATB chorus was then composed in 1969. A powerful setting, the chorus provides a rhythmic chanting evoking fieldhands at work.
