Description
For SATB chorus and piano
John Michael Cooper, editor
Margaret Bonds composed this piece in the 1950s. She indicated on the title page of the autograph that it was written “for seventh and eighth grades” (i.e., children ages 12-14 years). In keeping with the target ages, the setting is not difficult, but Bonds’s use of imitative responses between phrases is suggestive of the call-and-response texture typical of African and African American vernacular music. Accessible for choirs of all ages and skill.
