Maddalena Casulana
1544 - ca.1566-83
Casulana's three books of madrigals are the first publications by a woman composer. A well known composer in her time, she also had many works dedicated to her. Her music indicates originality and a very personal style but has been said to contain musical flaws, attributed to her lack of formal instruction. An Italian composer-lutenist and singer, she included her own poetic works as well as others with her texts.
